What to do in Tavira Algarve

Camera Obscura
An unusual attraction in Tavira is to take visit the top of the 100m Torre de Tavira. This used to be a water tower but is now a camera obscura, an optical device that allows a 360° real time image of the town below to be projected onto a huge white disk. As the mirror rotates, so does the panorama; an on site tour guide will explain Tavira’s historic landmarks and points of interest.

Boat Rides at Ria Formosa Natural Park
The Ria Formosa Natural Park has been voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal not only for its unique location but because of the sheer variety of landscapes and wildlife. The rare coastal lagoon constantly changes with tides, wind and water currents. The area is home to one of the largest seahorse populations in the world and is a bird watcher’s paradise. There are many local boat trips that will cruise through the water channels out to the fishing villages on the barrier islands, the beaches and around the lagoon to see the flora and fauna of this spectacular natural park.

Dolphin Watching
Nobody can resist the lure of seeing dolphins in their natural habitat. This delightful experience at sea will allow the visitor to experience the behaviours of bottle nose and common dolphins in their natural environment. From time to time, ocean turtles, flying fish and sunfish can be seen.

Sea Fishing
A fabulous experience is to try your luck at sea fishing from one of the fishing boats that will take you to the best fishing spots. Look forward to catching pollock, mackerel, snapper, garfish, hogfish, and black sea-bream.

Water Sports
Tavira offers a wide variety of water sports to be enjoyed by all the family. Everyone will have fun on the water ring rides being towed along in the sea by a fast boat. For beginners and more experienced enthusiasts there is kite surfing, paddle boarding, sailing, surfing and windsurfing.

Tavira Island
Tavira Island is reached by boat that departs from the city centre and from Quatro-Aguas ferry pier. The Island is 11Km long and is just 1km at the widest point. Here you will find what are considered some of Portugal’s finest beaches including a naturist beach. The island is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve.
